Team Malta’s participation in the squash competitions at the Commonwealth Games came to a close yesterday after both the mixed doubles and the men’s doubles pairings bowed out at the Last 16 stage yesterday.

In the men’s doubles, Brad Hindle Deguara and Daniel Zammit Lewis booked their place in the knock-out stages after defeating Jason Doyle and Jules Snagg, of St Vincent and the Grenadines, 2-0 (11-6, 11-4).

In the last 16 Hindle Deguara and Zammit Lewis were up against the formidable English pairing of James Wilstrop and Declan James.

The Maltese duo did offer a respectable challenge to the medal favourites but it was Wilstrop and James who won the match 2-0 (11-5, 11-3).

Hindle Deguara was also in action in the mixed doubles alongside Diane Kellas and the Maltese duo had another tough hurdle when they were up against world champions Alison Waters and Daryl Selby.

The English duo showed all their class when battling past Kellas and Hindle Deguara in straight setas – 11-3, 11-6.

Gary Giordimaina fell at the first hurdle when he competed in the Men’s Freestyle -57kg. The Maltese wrestler was beaten by superiority by Pakistan’s Muhammad Bilal.

Today, Adam Vella will be also in action when he competes in the Men’s Freestyle 65kg against Pakistan Abdul Wahab, a bronze medallist at last year’s Commonwealth Championships that were held in Johannesburg.
