The Grand Harbour regaled Cospicua rowers with the Freedom Day Shield for the 12th time, but the club's fans did not reciprocate the favour.

Footage showing food containers, empty beer cans and other disposables littering the Cospicua promenade has been uploaded on Facebook by event organisers Vent.

Vent said they were "super proud" of Cospicua's Regatta Club and their consecutive wins, however, the footage they received late on Sunday made them think twice about how proud they should be.

"The footage shows their celebration within which mass-littering, trash (sometimes intentionally) thrown in the same water they row in, underage children present in a smokey boozy atmosphere, all the while the grown-ups were throwing up against the back of the regatta club.

"The trash was in heaps everywhere, with the bins used as tables for the drinks...  was there enforcement in all of this? Of course there was, four of them, casually standing around the corner turning a blind eye to all of this going on."

Vent flagged the "absolute irony" that if anyone would want to keep our seas clean, it would be a regatta club.

Club says that area was cleared up straight after event

The regatta club was upset by the article, saying that the video was taken late on Sunday evening while celebrations were still taking place.

"The committee made arrangements to have the place cleaned immediately after the end of the activity - just as it does every time. This cleaning lasted until early Monday morning," a club spokesman said, adding that cleaning never took place while a village feast, concert or large activity was still going on.
