One person died and over 10 people were injured after a chemical plant in Shizuoka prefecture, Japan, exploded early Friday, according to local media.

Aerial footage by local broadcaster TV Tokyo shows heavy smoke billowing out of a factory in Fuji city, as firefighters are seen attempting to extinguish the fire.

The explosion was first reported to the police early Friday when the caller heard a large explosion at the factory, which is owned by Arakawa Chemical Industries, local media said.

Reports say more than 10 people were working at the four-storey plant when it exploded.

Residents within a 100 meter radius have been told by local authorities to evacuate the area due to the possibility there may be potentially hazardous chemicals in the smoke.
