A new trailer for upcoming blockbuster Assassin's Creed: The Leap of Faith takes viewers behind the scenes of a 125 foot (38 metre) freefall stunt that it claims is one of the highest ever performed.

The film, starring Academy Award nominee Michael Fassbender and Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard, is based on the hugely popular video game series of the same name.

Several of the film's scenes were shot around Valletta, and snapshots of Malta's capital appear throughout the trailer. Malta scenes were shot in August of 2015.

Director Justin Kurzel said he and his team had put a particular focus on basing the film on reality, with stunts preferred over special effects and CGI tricks.

The trailer shows Damien Walters, who served as a stunt double for Michael Fassbender, making progressively higher freefall leaps off a crane.

Walters starts off with a 70-foot leap, then leaps from 90 feet and finally 125 feet.

"That's the best bit, when you walk off and go 'yeah I'm all right, yeah'," a relieved Walters says at the end of it all.

Assassin's Creed: The Leap of Faith is due to be released in cinemas on December 21.
