A video which has emerged of a man dumping rubbish in a Valletta street corner exposes the blatant 'couldn't care less' attitude of some people towards commuters and the city's heritage.

The video shows the man casually dumping what appear to be scraps of paper on a street corner between Republic and Hospital streets and then walking away with the box. The street corner is riddled with other bags of rubbish.

Valletta mayor Alexiei Dingli said the perpetrator has been identified and action will be taken shortly.

"These acts are sometimes carried by people who live in Valletta and who say they love the city. It is such a shame when we know there's a free refuse service daily," he told timesofmalta.com.

Dr Dingli said the council was beefing up enforcement through the police and wardens after several reports of rubbish being dumped in street corners of the World Heritage Site.

Those found guilty of dumping could face a fine of up to 5,800 euros.
