Updated 12.26pm -  A Flamingo that was rescued from power lines near Popeye's village on Saturday-Sunday night has died as a result of its injuries.

The big bird got entangled in the power lines and was brought down and handed to BirdLife Malta by personnel from the Civil Protection Department after a delicate operation.

A BirdLife official confirmed that the bird was released by the NGO last week after it was found in a weak state and given some time to recover. It suffered severe injuries to its wings when it flew into the power lines.

During the rescue, the CPD deployed a hydraulic platform manned by an officer and two fire-fighters from Xemxija Fire Station

They worked closely with Enemalta personnel who shut down the power lines, and ensured that no residual electricity remained in the cables.

The rescuers wore electrical protective suits on top of their fire suits.
