The prime minister was not saying the truth about his comments on the 17 Black inquiry, and it was impossible for the police to simply investigate a company and not the people involved in it, Opposition leader Adrian Delia said on Wednesday.

"On the one hand the prime minister says he cannot know who is being investigated, but on the other hand he says that it is the company 17 Black which is being investigated and not [Chief of Staff] Keith Schembri or [Minister] Konrad Mizzi. How could this be?," Dr Delia asked at a press conference.

Referencing the Criminal Code, Dr Delia said it was impossible for the police to simply investigate a company and not the real people involved with it. Eventually, he said, persons would also be investigated.

Watch: I have confidence in Keith Schembri - Muscat

He denied having himself declared that the investigation was solely into 17 Black as had been reported in some sections of the press, saying that he had asked what the investigation was looking into.

Dr Delia observed that Dr Muscat had said prior to the 2017 general election that Mr Schembri would be made to resign if he was under investigation. Now the prime minister was not saying the truth as he had no other option.

The prime minister, he said, was trying to confuse the people with contradictory statements.

The Opposition, he said, would not speculate, but instead wanted to know the facts.
