WasteServ has commissioned a study of the odours around the incinerator in Marsa and their effects on the area.

Replying to a parliamentary question by Labour MP Leo Brincat, Resources Minister George Pullicino said that some months ago, WasteServ had received complaints about the incinerator from workers employed at a nearby establishment, but it had been confirmed that emissions were also within the limits laid down in the operating permit.

He said that a risk assessment was carried out before the plant started to operate in order to ensure that there were no hazards to people in its environs.

Wherever the possibility of hazards was identified, measures were taken to reduce or eliminate them.

Once the incinerator started to operate, various tests were carried out, particularly on the volume and type of emissions. Officials also carried out an assessment of biological risks and analysed noise levels.

Mr Pullicino said the workers in the plant itself are supplied with protective clothing.
