Birkirkara St Joseph triathlete Luke Bonnici took part in the Warwick Aquathlon at Saint Nicholas Leisure Park, in the UK, last week.

The weather was the worst that Bonnici could have hoped for, with chilly winds and cold temperatures prevailing. The race consisted of a 400m swim indoors and a 3.2km run.

In all, there were 183 competing in the aquathlon. Most of them were junior athletes participating in their respective age groups.

As a result, Bonnici was among the last triathletes to start the race, his starting number being 181. Due to the large entry, start times for each triathlete were set at one minute apart.

Bonnici's swim time, including transition, was six minutes 11 seconds, while the run time was 12 minutes 23 seconds. His overall time of 18 minutes 34 seconds won him the aquathlon by a margin of 58 seconds on his nearest rival.

Bonnici is currently studying geography at the Liverpool Hope University and will be staying there till the end of May. Until then, he will be figuring in three other races in the UK.

The next one is the Cow Man Sprint Triathlon, at Milton Keynes, on May 18. The following week Bonnici will be competing in Wales and on June 1 he will be doing a 10km race in the Mersey River Tunnel, in Liverpool.

In a statement Bonnici thanked his parents for their continuous support, the Coventry Triathlon Team and his club coach Dermot Galea.
