A long-forgotten wartime shelter was discovered in Main Street, Mosta this afternoon when slabs which had been hidden under old tarmac collapsed.

The incident happened as heavy machinery was being used to remove the old tarmac prior to resurfacing.

People peering down the large hole said they could see stairs leading down to the rock-hewn shelter, which was blocked after the war.
