Certain Acorn stairlifts may pose a risk to consumers as the seat post may detach from the main seat support and result in injuries, the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) said this morning.

The stairlifts are mechanical chairs installed on residential staircases to transport people with reduced mobility up and down the stairs.

Preventive action, it said, was being taken on the Acorn 120 Stairlift; the Acorn 120 Outdoor Stairlift; the Acorn 120 Superglide Stairlift; the Acorn Outdoor Stairlift and the Acorn Slimline Stairlift.

The stairlifts were manufactured between March 2007 and March 2011 and have serial numbers between 110101209781 and 110202352678.

On all of the mentioned stairlifts, the name “Acorn Superglide 120” and the serial numbers are located on a silver label on the stairlift’s carriage body cover and on the underside of the steel footrest.

This model is no longer supplied by Acorn or its distributors in Malta.

The majority of affected stairlifts in Malta have already had their seat post replaced.

Any consumers who may still have one of these stairlifts installed, where the seat post has not been replaced should contact the supplier from where they purchased the product so that the necessary corrective works are undertaken.

Alternatively, they can contact the Acorn head office on +44 1535 217928 or e-mail Acorn on eurosp@acornstairlifts.com .

Should consumers have any other queries they can contact the Technical Regulations Division within the authority on 2395 2000.
