Joe Sultana (December 24), without mentioning me by name, thought it best to misquote and twist my proposal for enforcement wardens to suit his argument against spring hunting.

He went one step further to ignore all that was pronounced in the European Court Of Justice and conclude that spring hunting is not in the pipeline. Until a few months ago, spring hunting was referred to as illegal, now Mr Sultana thought it best to change it to unethical. How about telling this to the European Court of Justice?

I was totally misquoted when Mr Sultana said that I proposed wardens to put pressure on the government to open spring hunting. Spring hunting will open without any pressure.

There is no requirement for pressure. It was promised before the referendum and confirmed in Parliament a few weeks ago. The government said that it will abide by the ruling given by the ECJ and it is case closed. We are only waiting for the dates for the duration of the season.

My recommendation for wardens, therefore, is not as Mr Sultana tries to imply.

On the contrary, I want to make sure that illegal hunting is tackled in a way that we law-abiding hunters are not made to suffer with spring hunting abruptly cut short. Is there anything wrong in that?

I repeat once again that our presence as wardens in the place of hunting should be enough to deter most illegal activity.

Anyone persisting would then be reported.

I always thought that BirdLife and the likes of Mr Sultana would welcome such an initiative but now I can understand that its success may prove the sensational reporting of illegal hunting to be highly inflated.

Once again I invite everyone who really is against illegal activity, whether he is a hunter or a bird watcher, to join forces and group together for a good cause.
