Former Polish President Lech Walesa, who was co-founder of the Solidarnosc trade union movement, earlier this month visited Gozo during a recent visit to Malta during which he delivered a talk on the future of Europe at Villa Parisio, seat of the Strickland Foundation, in Lija.

Mr Walesa laid flowers at the monument to the Polish Pope John Paul II in Victoria, where he was met by the committee in charge of the monument and presented with a framed picture of the monument.

Mr Walesa also visited Ta' Pinu sanctuary where he was met by the rector, Fr Gerard Buhagiar.

Signing the visitors' book Mr Walesa wrote: "It is an honour for me to find myself treading on the same footsteps of the great Pope, John Paul II, who paid a visit to this shrine."

At the end of the visit Fr Buhagiar presented Mr Walesa with a framed picture of the titular painting of Our Lady of Ta' Pinu.
