Volleyball players yesterday started a string of matches that will last until tomorrow evening in a bid to raise money for Dar tal-Providenza.

Just over 200 volunteers and 35 players will be taking part in the 52-hour volleyball marathon that was inaugurated by President George Abela.

After training for the past six weeks, the players served the first ball yesterday at 7 p.m. at the car park of Dar tal-Providenza. The marathon ends tomorrow at 11 p.m.

This is the first edition of the volleyball Għall-Providenza marathon that follows the similar charity event that used to be organised by the Kerygma Movement between 1986 and 2004.

Dar tal-Providenza, which caters for people with special needs, says it requires over €3.6 million a year to run and keep delivering the level of service it does for the 100 residents there.

Donations can be made on the following numbers: for €7 call on 5004 9553; €12, 5004 9555; and €23, 50049550. Donations of €7 can be made via SMS on 5061 8938.
