Samsung’s Galaxy Tab will sell in Vodafone’s major European markets and through several partner networks, as well as in various Vodafone markets worldwide from next month, the groups said in a joint statement on Thursday.

Vodafone Malta is expected to launch the product in the coming weeks.

The GT-P1,000 is powered by the Android Operating System 2.2 and is the first tablet, ‘smart media device’ by Samsung.

“Vodafone’s aim is to offer all customers new and attractive ways to enjoy mobile data, on the move, across a variety of devices,” group director of terminals at Vodafone Patrick Chomet said. “Adding tablets as part of our device range is a natural next step that gives customers an alternative way to enjoy great content and internet services. The Galaxy Tab is another showcase for Samsung’s innovation capabilities and we are pleased to be introducing this across a number of our markets.”

DJ Lee, Samsung senior vice-president and head of sales and marketing of mobile communications business said the Galaxy Tab could be an outstanding smart media device to lead a new media revolution.

The compact device allows full web browsing with Flash 10.1 support, the reading of eBooks, newspapers, or magazines, and viewing of HD videos on the seven-inch display on the move. It has a 3MP camera with auto focus and LED flash and a 1.3MP front camera for video telephony. The tablet is available with 16GB or 32 GB internal memory and comes with a 32GB external memory slot.

It weighs 380 grammes, making it half as light as the Apple iPad, which is also set for a Malta launch shortly.
