Division Two

Mellieha 1
Vittoriosa Stars 4

Vittoriosa Stars are the new Division Two leaders after a fine 4-1 win over Mellieha. The Cottonera side now have a two-point advantage over San Gwann and Tarxien. Mellieha had a good first half but were outclassed after the interval.

The first period was a balanced affair with Mellieha creating the best chances through Adrian Galea and Wayne Borg St John. Vittoriosa's reply came from a Carlos Scicluna effort from close in that was blocked by Mellieha goalkeeper Buttigieg.

The Stars broke the deadlock on 40 minutes when Tony Cachia fire home from a free-kick.

After the restart, Vittoriosa took the initiative and soon Robert Adami doubled their lead when he headed in a Lagana cross.

Lagana went on to make it 3-0 on 74 minutes. Joseph Vella pulled one back for Mellieha four minutes later but ten minutes from time Lucien Scerri sealed the issue for Vittoriosa with a fine goal after a solo move.

Tarxien Rainbows 5
Luqa St Andrews 0

Tarxien dominated this match particularly during the second half with their prolific striker Simon Shead scoring two further goals to take his tally to 19 goals from ten matches.

The Rainbows, with former Pietà defender Massimo Schembri making his debut for the team, dictated the run of play throughout and after only eight minutes they were already in front thanks to a Joseph Agius goal.

Luqa 'keeper Azzopardi then had to be at his best to deny Aaron Guazzo and Manuel Caruana.

Shead took only 16 seconds after the restart to double his side's lead with a low drive. The same player missed a sitter soon after but on 62 minutes Guazzo made it 3-0.

Shead hit goal number four for Tarxien three minutes later.

On 81 minutes, Azzopardi denied Ludvic Bartolo with the aid of the upright. But in time added on Jeffrey Zammit rounded up the score for Tarxien, heading in a Guazzo cross.

St Andrews 1
Zebbug Rangers 0

A David Busuttil goal was enough for the Saints to clinch their fourth victory of the season. The match was characterised by two controversial decisions by the referee.

After just five minutes Zebbug had a Gordon Mallia free-kick blocked by the Saints defence, the ball fell to Jason Cassar who was brought down in the area by Jose Borg.

The referee ordered a penalty but then reversed his decision because the assistant referee had already signalled for an offside.

The Saints took the lead on 32 minutes when Busuttil headed in a cross by Simon Cauchi.

Two minutes into the second period, Zebbug found the net from a Mallia free-kick but the referee, after consulting his assistant referee again, decided that the free-kick had to be re-taken. Melvin Farrugia's shot just missed the target.

Zebbug pressed forward for an equaliser but George Saliba and Cassar failed to find the Saints' net.

Zurrieq 3
Attard 0

Three late goals scored by Philip Farrugia, Jean Pierre Abdilla and Chris Farrugia, saw Zurrieq chalking up the three points at stake against Attard who had Josef Axisa sent off in the 73rd minute.

The first period proved to be balanced with Zurrieq creating the best chances through Abdilla, Franco Francalanza and Mark Sultana.

Attard came more into the picture after the break but midway through Axisa was involved in an incident and was sent off by referee Tanti.

This proved to be the turning point of the match as three minutes later substitute Philip Farrugia gave Zurrieq the lead. Abdilla made it 2-0 on 81 minutes and Chris Farrugia sealed the points for Zurrieq three minutes from time.

Division Three

Gudja United 1
Melita 4

Melita recovered from defeats to Sta Lucija and St George's as they obtained a deserved victory over Gudja United. They are now back in the promotion race.

The Amateurs shaded the first period and took a deserved lead after 20 minutes through Matthew Borg.

Three minutes later Melita went close to a second but Simon Barberi's header was cleared off the line by Mark Galea. Gregory Degabriele then added two more goals to Melita's tally to give the Amateurs a 3-0 lead at the break.

Gudja pulled one back eight minutes after the restart through Edmond Thornton. But Borg ensured Melita's victory after netting his second of the match and his side's fourth goal three minutes from time.

Mgarr United 0
Fgura United 1

A goal scored by Vince Testaferrata helped Fgura to edge past Mgarr and go top in Division Three. Despite the defeat Mgarr had a fine match and gave Fgura a good run for their money.

Fgura found it hard to penetrate the Mgarr defence during the first period with Mgarr 'keeper Jason Zammit twice denying them off efforts by Silvano Pace and Dione Agius. They finally broke the stalemate in the 33rd minute through a Testaferrata header.

Mgarr assumed the initiative after the break but they rarely troubled the Fgura defence. Their best chance arrived on 62 minutes when Oliver Said's shot was well saved by Mifsud.

Referee: Edward Spiteri.

Sta Venera Lightnings 0
Kirkop United 1

A fine goal by Alistair Camilleri helped Kirkop United to take maximum spoils from Sta Venera and are now joint second with Birzebbuga, one point behind Fgura.

Sta Venera dictated the run of play during the first half but it was Kirkop who created the first chance after just five minutes when Jean Paul Zammit' s shot was cleared off the line by Yau Mun Law. Sta Venera's best chance arrived on 38 minutes when Joseph Chetcuti's shot was well saved by Mizzi.

After the break, Kirkop goalkeeper Stephen Mizzi had to be at his best to deny Chetcuti. But in the 71st minute Kirkop scored the winner when Camilleri hit in a beauty from a Duncan Micallef cross. The Saints were unlucky not to draw level when Andrew Hili was denied by the bar.

Referee: Kevin Farrugia.

Sirens 1
Sta Lucija 1

A late equaliser by veteran striker Alex Muscat denied his former club Sirens from maximum spoils as his 89th minute strike tied the match to a 1-1 draw.

Sirens took the lead just before the break with a long range shot from Kevin Grima that surprised Saints' goalie Domenic Ellul.

But on resumption Sta Lucija saw more of the ball and after going close through Michael Portelli and Alex Muscat they finally drew level a minute from time.

Muscat profited from an indecision in the Sirens defence to fire in the equaliser.

The Saints could have stole it in injury time but Tonio Micallef's shot was saved by Lia.

Referee: Juergen Spiteri.
