The 2003 FISEC Games, the 55th in the series, were officially inaugurated yesterday in Salamanca with the opening ceremony at the Spanish city's San Esteban church.

The Maltese contingent, headed by Brother Martin Borg, featured in the march past of athletes in the main streets of Salamanca. The parade finished in Mayor Square.

All participants then converged to San Esteban church where they took part in a special celebration which highlighted the huge sense of unity that exists between participating FISEC countries.

The organising committee, along with the FISEC international delegations, which included president Francisco Vigara and Malta representative Gianfranco Selvaggi, declared the Games open amid the enthusiasm of the athletes. The main theme this year is 'Participar ya es Gagner' which means participation is better than winning.

FISEC Games organisers have also set up a shop where visiting delegations will have the opportunity to purchase or exchange souvenirs. Earnings here will be passed on to a philantropic society in Salamanca.
