Ten cruise liners called at Grnd Harbour last month, bringing 24,355 passengers, an increase of 12,986 passengers over March 2009, Viset said today.

Eleven vessels had been due to call in March. but the Louis Majesty cancelled one of its calls following an incident at sea when it was hit by a freak wave off Barcelona.

"The increase in March redressed the fall in passenger numbers in January and February. The decrease in passenger numbers resulted from the cessation of Mediterranean calls by one cruise company and the cancellation of one call due to bad weather on its route to Malta," Viset said.

In the first quarter of 2010, 44,786 passengers passed through the port of Valletta, an increase of around 41% over the same period last year.

The total number of vessels increased from 15 in 2009 to 20 in 2010.
