After almost two decades of being uninhabited, Lija's Villa Francia was inaugurated last night following an intricate restoration process.

The restoration on the 18th century architectural jewel, which was formerly known as Villa Preziosi, started in 2006 by the Infrastructure Ministry, with the help of the Resources Ministry and MCAST students.

The villa comprises a coach room, a water mill and 10 fountains and is surrounded by large gardens.

It was the residence of Sir Ugo Mifsud during his term as Prime Minister between 1924 and 1927. Villa Francia is now government-owned and will be used for official functions.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony last night, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said the government is undertaking 80 different projects, among which are restoration projects which emphasise the charm and beauty of the heritage.

Dr Gonzi underlined the restoration works carried out in Mdina and on the bastions and said next year, work will begin on the Collachio in Vittoriosa.

Villa Francia will be open to the public today between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Documents related to Sir Ugo Mifsud will also be exhibited.
