A man fell off a cliff at Selmun overlooking St Paul's Islands this afternoon.

The incident was noticed by an off-duty rescuer of the Civil Protection Department who was on a nearby boat. He quickly got to shore and climbed the rocks to reach the injured man, 40, giving him first aid.

The man was then rescued by rescuers of the Armed Forces of Malta who lifted him from the rocks on an Alouette helicopter.

The helicopter landed near a waiting ambulance which conveyed the man to hospital.

Meanwhile, in the morning, fire fighters of the Civil Protection Department were called to fight a blaze in a flat in Birzebbuga.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a microwave oven. The premises were empty other than for a cat, which was rescued.
