Prime Minister Joseph Muscat this morning admitted that the government was currently using illegal billboards but said that was the fault of the contractor.

Replying to questions by Times of Malta after the inauguration of a new branch of Banif Bank in Mosta, Dr Muscat said that he would be taking action to see that the issue was rectified.

Asked whether this meant that he would be ordering the government to remove ads from illegal billboards he declined to reply but said that the government would be talking to the contractor to rectify the situation.

Last Saturday,Times of Malta reported that the government was using illegal billboards in information campaigns funded by taxpayers’ money.

Some of them had Mepa enforcement notices and had been used by the Labour Party in the electoral campaign.

On the absence of government officials representing Malta during the canonisation of the two Popes yesterday, Dr Muscat said that the government was represented by Speaker Anglu Farrugia and by his own wife Michelle.
