Trees at Independence Square in Victoria were never in danger of being removed as the authority sequentially turned down the applications and appeals submitted by the Victoria council.

Over the past year, the authority said it received two formal requests and a petition from residents for the trees to be removed as part of the upgrading works and embellishment of the square.

On April 11 and October 2, the authority informed the council that the trees were not to be removed as they enhanced and contributed to the quality and the biodiversity of the urban core.

The authority confirmed its position when, on November 14, it replied to a petition which was calling for the removal of the trees.

"The trees are safe and will remain in it-Tokk Square not because of any court action but because the authority sequentially turned down the requests of the Victoria local council, Mepa said.
