Elizabeth-Mary and Patrick Quintano write:

Our grandfather Victor Gauci passed away peacefully on May 3 at the age of 83.

He has left his beloved Naxxar church artistically richer with a raft of works which should be the pride of future parishioners.

The altar and the two inlaid crucifixes - one of them normally displayed on the back of Christ the Redeemer on Good Friday, remain two memorable features of this church.

But grandfather also worked indefatigably beyond the confines of the church. For long years, he used to spend his Sunday mornings repairing or repainting the street decorations used for the feast of Our Lady of Victories, while in his spare time he was always designing new pavilions, creating new frame designs for church paintings - the picture of St Jude is a good example - or actively giving advice in the feast committee.

Victor was a sculptor and a painter. In fact, his classical furniture can be found from the north to the south of Malta while his original 'still lifes' adorn many private houses. His Seashells, Nuts Falling From a Sack, and Carpenter's Tools at Rest arrest the viewer's attention with their shades of brown and unusual composition. His Kitchen Ware in Blue strikes the imagination with its stately decorum.

However, our grandfather will mostly be remembered as a charitable person who tried hard to help some of his employees in times of difficulty.

Most of all, he never forgot Id-Dar tal-Providenza where his portrait of Mgr Azzopardi still hangs.

We all miss this kindly man with a smile on his face. May God grant him eternal rest.
