A phone bill belonging to Christine Sammut, including a list of numbers she would have called, was allegedly passed on to the man charged with her murder by a former Vodafone employee who will be facing charges of breaching data protection and professional secrecy.

It is being alleged that the employee, who has since been sacked, passed on the bill to Kenneth Gafà, Ms Sammut’s former boyfriend who is pleading not guilty to her murder in Żebbiegħ.

Ms Sammut, 40, of Rabat, was shot twice in the neck while waiting for her boyfriend on December 11 in a white Citroen Berlingo parked at a crossroads in Żebbiegħ, Mġarr.

The police arrested Mr Gafà, 38, of Marsa, after he turned himself in at the Ħamrun police station less than one hour after the shooting. The police are arguing that Mr Gafà, a bus driver and horse jockey, became obsessed with Ms Sammut after she ended their one-year relationship with him.

Vodafone, confirmed the case and said it took the privacy of its customers’ information extremely seriously and “has in place detailed compliance requirements for all of its employees to safeguard against disclosure of sensitive data”.

The person in question did not follow the company’s requirements and disclosed Ms Sammut’s itemised bill to a third party, Vodafone said.

However, the company denied press reports its former employee disclosed information relating to Ms Sammut’s location.

Vodafone said it was deeply saddened by Ms Sammut’s death and was working closely with the police to provide them with all necessary help in their investigations.
