Veteran motoring expert Hugh Arnett died of a heart attack last night, aged 77.

A former consultant with the transport watchdog, Mr Arnett had last year proposed mitigating the traffic problem at the traffic junctions through the installation of  traffic lights that would only be operational during rush hour to let traffic flow freely during the rest of the day.

He had said when Arriva left the island that the company got caught on its own petards by not getting the full cooperation of local councils, who actually knew what was required in each locality for the provision of a safe and fast transport system.

Mr Arnett was considered one of the pioneers of motorsport in Malta.

He was married to Eve and had two children Sue and Nikita.
