In-form German veteran golfer Bernhard Langer could earn himself a call-up to his 11th Ryder Cup clash with the United States European, captain Colin Montgomerie revealed yesterday.

Langer, who turns 53 on August 27, has been in sparkling form of late, albeit on the Seniors Tour, collecting both the British and US Senior Open titles in the past month and Montgomerie said that picking him as one of his wild cards for the biennial clash – which takes place at Celtic Manor in Wales from October 1-3 – wouldn’t be too much of a shock.

“I would not rule out picking Bernhard,” said 47-year-old Montgomerie, who played with Langer on several victorious Ryder Cup teams and under him in the 2004 victory in the United States.

“It wouldn’t be such an out-of-the-blue pick. I think he’s playing as well as he ever has and he’s said he is.”

Montgomerie, who has three wild card picks at his disposal where he must decide upon in a month’s time, said that what Langer had said after winning the US Senior Open had struck a chord with him.

“He (Langer) said afterwards that he used everything he had learned in the Ryder Cup to overcome a very vocal home support (in Seattle) and I think it wouldn’t be such a dramatic move to have someone of that age and that experience in the team,” said Montgomerie.

“I know through having played with Bernhard that he is as good a partner as anyone could ever have.”
