A Venezuelan man resident in Italy this morning objected to a request by Italy for extradition after having allegedly jumped bail.

The man, Diego Rugeri, 38, was arrested in Malta in February after using false travel documents. He was subsequently jailed and was due to be released today.

However the authorities in Trapani requested his extradition to Italy for jumping bail there.

The request started being considered in court this morning. Mr Rugeri contested the request and was remanded in custody.

The reason for his bail in Sicily was not given in court.
