Week 17 of the national league at the Eden SuperBowl saw a surprising defeat for leaders Veltins Premium Lager at the hands of relegation-threatened The Masacuatas.

On the other hand, Fina First moved second after a maximum win over Vodafone as sister team Fina Excel also picked up all points from their match against Café D'Or.

Veltins definitely felt the absence of their foreign import Chris Beesley who is now back in his native England after an illustrious four-month stint on the Maltese bowling scene.

The Masacuatas were the far more consistent side in spite of their current league position and claimed the series points by 158 pins.

Bowler of the week Colin Attard rolled a fine 673 set for The Masacuatas.

Fina First were big winners against Vodafone, taking the match 8-0 to narrow the gap on Veltins to 17 points.

The underdogs could easily have been in the points in game one which was extremely close, Fina just clinching it 789-787. Game two was just a little more open 762-735 before Fina made sure of all points by taking the final game 769-684.

Fina Excel were the only other Division One side to walk off with a 100% victory to the detriment of Café D'Or, who are now eighth. The latter put up very little defence as Excel won the series by 243 pins.

Fifth-placed Aercomms picked up six points from their clash with Maltacom but both teams remain static in spite of the result. On their part, bottom side Toons were losers yet again. Last week, they were beaten 6-2 by Royal Shock, who are ninth.

The other match of the week, between Ramis and Thunder Storm, ended in a 4-all draw. Thunder Storm claimed the series points in spite of only winning one game.

After winning two games, Ramis stumbled to a low 599 in game three to Thunder Storm's 693. This cancelled out Ramis' previous pinfall advantage and handed the series points to their opponents (2,157-2,177).
