SENGLEA ATHLETIC      1

T. Vella 90 pen.

GŻIRA UNITED                1

Okoye 48

Terrence Vella scored an injury time penalty as Senglea Athletic came from behind to hold Gzira United to a 1-1 draw at the Centenary Stadium.

Gżira struggled to make any inroads in the Senglea defence and their first chance came on 20 minutes when Roderick Briffa hit a firm drive that was tipped over by Giulio Cetrangolo.

Eight minutes from the break Sacha Borg saw his effort blocked by the alert Cetrangolo.

In the second half, the game changed completely as Gżira took just three minutes to find the breakhtrough.

Samb sped into the area and chipped the ball into the path of the unmarked Okoye who headed the ball into the net.

Senglea’s response came in the form of Virano’s inswinger that was well held by Haber.

Samb had a glorious opportunity on 68 minutes when he was brought down in the area by Randall Farrugia with the referee pointing to the spot.

However, Samb saw his low drive pushed away by the Gżira no.1.

The Maroons almost paid dearly for this miss as on 77 minutes Sergio Uyi connected to Escobar’s free-kick but his first-time effort hit the upright.

When it looked like Gżira would hang on to their lead, Senglea grabbed the equaliser deep in stoppage time.

Escobar’s inswinger was somehow palmed away by Haber with the ball falling into the path of Terracciano who was upended in the area by Gatt Baldacchino.

From the spot, Terence Vella drilled the ball into the roof of the net to the delight of the Senglea clan.
