Foreign Minister George Vella today unveiled a memorial in honour of Vaclav Havel, former President of the Czech Republic.

In a short ceremony at Hastings Garden in Valletta, Dr Vella described Mr Havel as a visionary that led his country to independence from Soviet domination.

Dr Vella recalled a message that Mr Havel delivered on New Year’s Day in 2003, when he called for a united Europe based on freedom of expression and the rule of law.

Almost 25 years since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Havel's vision is still relevant and an inspiration to all those who cherish these noble values, the minister said.

The event was attended by Czech Ambassador Petr Burianek, Tonio Casapinta, Honorary Consul of Malta to the Czech Republic, and other distinguished guests.
