The Individual League got off to a start last weekend with the opening fixtures from the first and second divisions at St Martin's College, Swatar.

The 39 participants are graded into four divisions, according to their standard of play. Each fixture consists of only two sets of 15 points. Three points are awarded for a win; a drawn result signifies a point to each player.

Defending champion Kenneth Vella (Pawla Wolves BC), notched his first two wins in the First Division at the expense of Robert Salomone and Aldo Polidano.

Title contender Stefan Salomone (Birkirkara BC), who last season kept up a determined challenge till the very last fixture, followed suit with two similar wins over Konrad Degabriele and Martin Farrugia.

Division One: S. Salomone vs K. Degabriele 15/6 15/3, M. Farrugia vs A. Polidano 7/15 9/15, R. Salomone vs K. Vella 7/15 6/15, S. Salomone vs M. Farrugia 15/4 15/2, K. Degabriele vs R. Salomone 8/15 3/15, A. Polidano vs K. Vella 10/15 6/15.

In the Second Division, Karl Gambin (Birkirkara BC) and Joachim Boholm (Pawla Wolves BC) are jointly on maximum points after two wins. Jo'Anne Cassar (Birkirkara BC) had a somewhat unlucky start due to a back injury.

The Third Division championship gets underway on Sunday. The first matches start at 9.30 a.m.
