The charging points for electric cars, currently being installed around Malta and Gozo, will be available for use free of charge for a year, the government announced today.

75 charging points are being installed in Malta and 15 in Gozo.

The Transport Ministry is currently using a number of electric cars. One of them has been transferred to the Ministry of Gozo.

Transport Minister Joe Mizzi said road transport accounted to almost 17 per cent of emissions in Malta, a figure which was alarming and unacceptable.

The government was committed to making transport in Malta sustainable – including through an efficient bus service - and it would promote the use of electric cars.

Gozo Minister Anton Refalo said the ministry was committed to the eco-Gozo targets which included improved air quality.
