A vegetable hawker was today accused in court of stealing the vegetables which he then sold from his van.

Paul Calleja, 57 of Mosta was also accused of assaulting a police inspector, a sergeant and a constable when they asked him to move his van from its   spot in Sliema.

The court was told that at least on four occasions since January, Mr Calleja stole a large amount of vegetables from fields near Mgarr.

He was also accused of handling stolen property and relapsing.

Police Inspector Jason Sultana objected to bail because two witnesses still had to testify.

Magistrate Tonio Micallef Trigona said refusal of bail was the exception and he ruled that bail was justified against a deposit of €500 and a personal guarantee of €5,000.
