The 31 people allegedly involved in the VAT scandal are expected to be formally arraigned separately and to face different charges on September 9, informed sources said. The police filed the charges in the court registry on Tuesday.

Those to be accused in the €10 million scam are six VAT department employees, five go-betweens and 20 businessmen.

The police raided the department on April 3 following three months of investigations, triggered by a businessman who brought the scam to the attention of Finance Minister Tonio Fenech.

If found guilty those who set up the scam face a maximum jail term of 10 years.
