Two young men are under intensive care after being injured in a small explosion that police suspect was the result of an attempt to vandalise a substation in Corradino, Paola on Wednesday.

The men, 23 and 25, are thought to have broken into the dangerous room and tampered with the cables inside, setting off an explosion which threw one of them out of the room, police sources said.

They were rushed to hospital after passersby ran to their assistance when they heard the bang and, although they are not in a critical condition, they were placed under intensive care because of the serious burns they suffered.

At about 7.20 p.m., Enemalta Corporation alerted technicians to a fault which cut power to Corradino, Ħas Saptan, Marsaxlokk and Birżebbuġa.

Electricity was restored by 9.53 p.m. The Paola district police are investigating and an inquiry was launched by Magistrate Claire Micallef Strafrace.
