Balzan ended Valletta’s four-match unbeaten run when they held the 10-man Citizens to a 1-1 draw at the Tedesco Stadium.

Valletta were off to a flier and they managed to take the lead after 18 minutes. Aziz Corr Nyang sped into the area and fed Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza who saw his shot on the turn deflected past Balzan goalkeeper Michael Falzon.

But Balzan refused to throw in the towel and they managed to draw level on 47 minutes. Lydon Micallef sped into the area but was upended by Valletta goalkeeper Yenz Cini. The referee immediately pointed to the spot and Jose Luis Armario Negrin drilled the ball past Cini.

Valletta suffered a blow on 52 minutes when Jason Vandelannoitte was dismissed after he committed his second bookable offence after a foul on Lydon Micallef.

With a man more on the pitch, Balzan threw more men forward and they almost won the match late on when Jose Luis Armario Negrin sped in the area but his pass towards the unmarked Ryan Darmanin was anticipated by Steve Borg.

Balzan midfielder Fabio Vignaroli was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
