Valletta clinched the BOV Premier League title this evening and celebrated widely at the National Stadium and later in the streets of the Capital.

The title was clinched with a 1-0 win over Marsaxlokk.

The celebrations started well before the game, with thousands  of flag-waving City supporters knowing that a draw would suffice to crown their team champions.

With Birkirkara and Ħamrun Spartans playing each other in the opening game, the raucous City fans began to goad their rivals before the start of their team’s match against Marsaxlokk.

They grew louder as kick-off approached while a group of fans unfurled a giant flag showing a portrait of club president Victor Sciriha.

A raucous roar rose from the stands as the two teams ran on to the pitch for kick-off. Most of the 3,876 spectators who attended today’s two top-flight games were clearly Valletta fans who thronged the sections allocated to them.

After a quiet first half in which Valletta struggled to break down Marsaxlokk, their supporters raised the roof when Roderick Briffa put them ahead.

Their celebrations continued for the remainder of the second half and well after after the final whistle as the players milked the adulation of the jubilant fans.

An impromptu street party followed in Republic Street.
