The top two teams in the men's volleyball league faced each other at the Cottonera Sports Complex last Sunday in what turned out to be a great performance for second-placed Valletta Mapei.

In their previous direct clashes this season, leaders Fleur-de-Lys easily overcame Mapei's resistance, winning both matches 3-0. One of the victories rewarded FDL with the Super Cup.

Valletta lost to third-placed SouthEnd in their previous outing and few gave them a chance of having the better of Fleur-de-Lys on Sunday.

However, Mapei had different ideas and with Robert Balzan back in their ranks after recovering from injury and Paul Vella causing havoc in the Fleur-de-Lys ranks, Valletta won precious points to stay in contention.

Fleur-de-Lys were never in it and failed to make a comeback.

Coach Patrick Bonnet tried several tactical options but his effort was in vain as Mapei won the match in straight sets - 3-0.

In the Women's League, Paola Hibs Candy played their second team, Paola.

Coaches David Bonnici and Stefan Decelis took the opportunity to field some fringe players with the aim of giving them more experience in competitive volleyball.

Sherika Seychell, of Hibs Candy, had an excellent game along with Nadia Tagliaferro who surprised Hibs' defence on a number of occasions with her powerful services.

Champions Paola Hibs Candy cruised to a 3-0 win.
