Valletta stuck a psychological blow on pacesetters Hibernians and Gzira ahead of their direct clash on Sunday. It was a hard-fought victory against a stubborn Qormi side, which positioned Valletta at the top of the tables, three points clear of Hibernians.
The Citizens managed to break the deadlock on 24 minutes when off an assist by Rowen Muscat, Miguel Angel Alba’s diagonal shot from the right beat goalkeeper Cassar.
Four minutes later, Valletta doubled the score when Bojan Kaljevic’s first-time effort hit the crossbar before ending at the back of the net, following a cross by Enmy Pena Beltre.
A minute from half-time, Qormi manageed to pull one back when off a cross by Rozzi, a mix-up between Bonello and Borg allowed Mohamed Bangoura to hit home from close range.
