The Saint Bernard Syndicate, a Danish comedy by Mads Brügger (The Ambassador, The Red Chapel) is opening the fourth edition of the Valletta Film Festival.

The 10-day festival, organised by Film Grain Foundation, will take place between today and June 17. Over 40 feature films and 27 short films will be shown at several open-air and indoor venues around Valletta.

The Saint Bernard Syndicate had its world premiere in April at the Tribeca Film Festival where it was awarded best screenplay award and best actor award (Rasmus Bruun).

This first fiction film by Brügger tells the story of  two Danish men in their 30s who embark on a business adventure in China. At the centre of the cross-cultural encounters is a 100kg St Bernard dog that everyone loves.

The film explores differences in values – about the role of dogs in the world, business conduit and gender relations – all in a dark comedy tone.

The opening ceremony and screening takes place today at the Pjazza Teatru Rjal at 8.45pm. For tickets and more information about other films showing at the festival, visit www.vallettafilmfestival.com.

The Valletta Film Festival is supported by Arts Council Malta through a Cultural Partnership Agreement.
