Valletta needed a last-gasp goal from Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza to edge past a solid Vittoriosa Stars at the Centenary Stadium.

The Stars seemed on their way to a shock result when they took the lead after 25 minutes.

Marcelo Pereira sped into the area but his run was illegally halted by Yessous Camilleri with referee Malcolm Spiteri immediately pointing to the spot. From the resultant penalty, Oscar Guerrero rammed the ball past Valletta goalkeeper Yenz Cini.

Valletta laid siege to the Vittoriosa goal but they struggled to find a way past Jean-Mathias Vella, the Stars goalkeeper, who effected a string of fine saves.

Denni finally grabbed Valletta’s equaliser on 70 minutes when he connected to Aziz Corr Nyang’s cross and his header flew past the diving Vella.

Vittoriosa could have regained their lead nine minutes later when Adam Spiteri released Pereira who was clean through. The Brazilian turned past Yenz Cini but incredibly fired wide.

That turned out to be a crucial miss as it was Valletta who grabbed the winner two minutes from time.Substitute Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza sped into the area and let fly a fierce drive that gave Vella no chance.

Valletta’s Aziz Corr Nyang was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
