Pirates, fairies, tribal chiefs and cartoon characters turned Valletta into a city of colourful costumes today as Carnival entered into its third day.

Many families thronged to the capital some opting to park as far as Msida and walking the rest of the way avoiding the traffic that gathered in St Anne Street, Floriana.

The celebrations today included dancing competitions at Freedom Square in Valletta and a grand defile with the participation of King Carnival, triumphal and company floats, bands and grottesque masks along Merchant Street, St. John’s Street, and Republic Street.

Unfortunately, the festive mood did not go without incident and an ambulance had to be called when a 55-year-old English woman watching the celebrations from the ruins of the Opera House was slightly injured during a fall of about a storey. She was taken to Mater Dei but was released later.

Celebrations continue tomorrow.
