The Asian Games was hit by its first positive drugs test yesterday with Uzbek judoka Shokir Muminov stripped of his -81kg silver medal and thrown out of the sporting showpiece.

The 27-year-old, who won a bronze at the last Asiad in Doha four years ago, lost to South Korea’s Kim Jae-Bum in Sunday’s final and failed a dope test the same day.

“The athlete has been disqualified from the competition as well as these Asian Games and his performance in the judo competition has been nullified,” said Mani Jegathesan, chairman of the Olympic Council of Asia’s medical committee.

“His medal was withdrawn and appropriate adjustments made to the results.”

Muminov tested positive for methylhexaneamine, a stimulant used widely as a nasal decongestant, which is on the WADA list of prohibited substances.

Currently, a positive test for the substance carries a two-year ban but it will be re-classified from January. From then, there will be more room for leniency with a sanction ranging from a warning to a two-year ban.
