Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said today that the utility tariffs will be revised downwards as soon as the Malta Resources Authority gives Enemalta its go-ahead.

Speaking during a press conference in Brussels at the end of a two-day EU summit, Dr Gonzi confirmed that Enemalta has just concluded its proposed revision of the utility rates and the data was to be passed on to the MRA for approval.

‘My wish is that the MRA will conclude its analyses as soon as possible so that the new tariffs can be mae official. We need to move on this issue and settle it,’ Dr Gonzi told timesofmalta.com.

The new water and electricity tariffs are expected to go down significantly following a decline in the international price of oil.

During the press conference Dr Gonzi also confirmed that Malta has managed to acquire €25 million in fresh EU funds from the EU to be used for its energy related projects particularly the interconnection between Malta and the European electricity grid through a submarine cable.

He said the new funds would bring the total amount of EU funds dedicated to Malta during the current seven-year financial perspectives (2007-2013) to €1.159 billion.
