The US Navy and Marine Corps have suspended their search and rescue efforts for three Marines missing after their aircraft crashed into the sea off Australia's coast.

Twenty-three others aboard the Osprey aircraft were rescued.

One person was taken to hospital.

The aircraft was on regular operations when it hit the water. Officials called weather conditions at the time "benign."

In December, the US military grounded its Osprey tilt rotor fleet in Japan after one of them ditched into the sea, injuring five crew.
