Adds arrival of second F-16 and picture

Two American Air Force F-16 fighter jets diverted to Malta this afternoon after running short of fuel.

The first landed at noon and the second shortly after. They appeared to be carrying missiles on their wing tips and underwing.

Four pairs of French air force aircraft and two Danish Air Force F-16s diverted to Malta for refuelling or other technical reasons since the start of operations over Libya.

The US planes are flying their sorties from the Sigonella base in Sicily.
