Malta is to receive up to $4.675 million from the US Department of Defence, the US embassy said.

It said in a statement that the department, with the concurrence of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has approved Malta to receive up the sum under the National Defense Authorisation Act.

This assistance is designed to build the capacity of partner nations to conduct counter-terrorism operations.

The funding was first revealed by the Associated Press late last month. The agency had said that the aid will consist of  boats, night-vision equipment, computers and maritime training.

The embassy is working with the Maltese government and the US Department of Defense to ensure Malta’s security is well served by any US government funding, the embassy said.
