Three people trapped in their cars during yesterday's cyclone were rescued by the Civil Protection Department, whose personnel worked round the clock to deal with mayhem on Malta's roads.

Yesterday’s rare cyclone led to the closure of the airport and halted Gozo Channel services for several hours besides leaving a number of homes without power. Although electricity has been restored in several areas, some houses are still without power.

There were traffic jams all over the island because of uprooted trees and debris on the roads.

In a statement this morning, the Civil Protection Department said it had dealt with 33 incidents.

It was called out to rescue three people trapped in cars that were filling up with water, as well dealing with two flooded homes and a fire at a commercial establishment.

The department said it was now working to clear roads that were still flooded and to remove uprooted trees.

MOST STORM DAMAGE REPAIR WORKS COMPLETED - ENEMALTA

In a statement this afternoon, Enemalta said the storm caused extensive damage to outdoor electricity distribution equipment in several localities.

A number of high tension network faults were registered and more than 250 other reports of storm damage were logged, disrupting supply to some customers.

Although repair works were carried out immediately where possible, repairs in some cases could only start after weather conditions were safe enough.
