Migrant families brought to Malta last Thursday after they were rescued from a sinking ship by a cargo vessel protested against conditions at the Naxxar counting as they help two placards reading "Freedom" and "Thank you Malta".

The migrants, who numbered some 100, were moved to Naxxar from Safi after they failed to cooperate with the authorities for the necessary medical clearance and interviews.

A spokeswoman for the government said the migrants were taken to Naxxar instead of a detention centre.

During the protest, non-governmental organisations tried to convince the migrants to accept to move to Lyster Detention Centre where the conditions were better but they opted to be detained at Naxxar until they obtained the necessary clearance so that they could then be moved to open centres.

The situation is now under control.
