A Maltese-registered Tecnam P2002JF light aircraft made an emergency landing in a field near Comiso, Sicily, this morning, after developing engine trouble.

The pilot, who was the only person on board, was unharmed.

The incident took place during a training flight by the European Pilot Academy shortly after 9am.

It is understood that the pilot was on his first solo flight and was approaching Comiso Airport.

The academy said arrangements were being made for the pilot and the aircraft to be brought to Malta.

It would not say what damage was suffered by the aircraft.

Transport Malta said it was investigating the incident together with the Italian authorities.
